little early morning mess in the northbound lanes. but traffic has quickly recovered. let's show you a couple live looks. turned the metering lights on ten minutes ago. now we are left with traffic delays in all lanes. more on our crazy forecast, let's get a first check of your weather. here's lawrence. lightning strikes around the bay area. thousands of them. right now things are calming down. a lot of the moisture making its way off. a little bit of moisture left over. kind of similar to yesterday. kind of a quiet start to the morning. that could change in toward the afternoon. a big fog settled in over the bay. drizzle toward the coastline. temperatures mild again this morning. not as quite as warm as yesterday. 63 in livermore. and 60 in concord. that low continues to spin off the coastline. and until it moves out, keep things unsettled. highs today in the

80s. 70s and 80s inside the bay. and 60s out toward the coast. back to you. >> thank you. there was plenty of lightning last night and early this morning. viewers sent us pictures from a number of locations. sue kwon is in the berkeley hills where firefighters are on alert this morning. >> reporter: that's right. it's very relevant here . this is where we had the 1991 fire storm. and we do have signs posted that say the fire danger is high. there is threat for more lightning strikes as the temperatures get hotter this afternoon. right now it's quite cool, a little bit of fog clearing. this is why folks are concerned. viewers captured lightning all over the bay area. 16,000 strikes estimated between 5:00 in the evening yesterday and 3:00 a.m. this morning. at least one bolt per every second. that's why fire stations are on

high alert. an electrical fire yesterday set homeowner's deck on fire. and firefighters squashed it quickly. they were able to stop it before it spread to nearby vegetation and neighbors. speed these days is their best tactic. >> first and foremost, we're in drought conditions. and then all the fuels are drying. all the annual grasses have died. and a lot of the vegetation has low fuel moisture. today we have the extra element for potential in the atmosphere. >> and so the red flag warning is in affect for the foothill regions, especially along the coastal region as well through tomorrow. extra personnel are on site. many homeowners have fire hoses ready. reporting live in the berkeley hills, i'm

sue kwon. >> a lightning strike is blamed for fires in california right now. there are also three fires burning in far northern california. one of the biggest fires this morning is the american fire in the sierra nevada. scorched nearly 15,000 acres in steep terrain. 2000 firefighters are on the fire lines. 53% contained this morning. and some of the areas burned have not had a fire in more than a century. people are allowed to return to their homes sweetened by the swedes fire. one home and several out buildings were burned. more than 300 buildings are still threatened. evacuees are worried about what they'll find when they go home. one of the fires could change travel plans. the rim fire closed -- the fire is also

led to evacuations in the buck meadow area. >> new details are about to be released in the closure and reopening of the bay bridge. cate caugurian explains this comes amid debate over a big bonus the contractor may receive. >> the contractor is getting a bonus for on time opening are the same ones who are partly to blame for the busted bolts. america bridge floor is contractor working on installing a series of wedges. these are supposed to reinforce the cracked bolt making way for on time opening and for them to collect a $20 million bonus for finishing the bridge by labor day. before cal trans signs bonus checks. anthony canella wants them to recheck the map. the cost to fix it, the same as the bonus. $20 million. >> signed with the contractor a

couple years ago. also in the contract were the assumptions the bridge would be constructed correctly also in the contract the assumption bolts wouldn't break as soon as you put them under tension. did the contractor earn the bonus and should the contractor's -- will decide if the contractor will get the bonus. we do not know when. reporting live, ann, back to you. >> what does cal trans have to say about this? >> reporter: we don't know. we've tried to reach out to the agency but no representatives have returned our calls. there will be an update later on this morning. hopefully then we can get more answers. >> we want to mention now, apparently the lights are out on the lower deck of the bay bridge. we're trying to get more information and we'll bring it to you when wefsh it. one man has died after a

shooting at an east san jose restaurant. three men were shot at the wong han restaurant. one of them died four hours later. neighbors say they are surprised by the violence. >> families and children. and older folks. it's a good neighborhood. it's sad that this has to happen. but i guess it could happen anywhere. >> police tell us the shooting happened inside the restaurant. there is no suspect information available. >> no one will be larged on the deadly limo fire on the bridge. it was an accident and mechanical issue. trapped 9 friends on the way to celebrate a wedding. no one will face charges. investigators say say catastrophic failure in the rear suspension system sparked that fire. the floor boards were set on fire from the heat of metal

transportation agency" says there are with the new school year underway, san francisco is added 45 crossing guards. there are now 195 crossing guards around town patrolling busy streets near public and private schools. city planners in redwood city will take up a proposal for a stanford satellite campus. wants to develop a 35 acre site near douglas avenue, bay road. offering $15 million in public benefits including street

upgrades and business training programs for residents. in exchange, the city would be allowed to develop a new campus over a 30 year period. >> this afternoon students of city college in san francisco want to march to city hall. want mayor ed lee to take a stand. the students want a reversal of the appointment of a trustee. rock slides closed the sierra. starting falling during heavy rain. a number of cars got stuck behind boulders and mud. crews trying to clear the roadway are worried about mud slides. could be several days before that road is open again. >> let's get a check on the traffic alert. >> back towards the bay bridge. we have just confirmed with cal trans it is just the lower deck that lost power a little while ago. it's the western span, the san francisco side of the bridge lower deck traffic.

the lights are out. including in the tunnel but so far traffic is not impacted. things are moving along okay. if you are in the commute direction heading towards san francisco, bay bridge toll plaza, busy once again. a lot of kids are heading back to school. heavier traffic conditions at the bay bridge toll plaza. it is jammed solid past the over crossings. let's go out towards our map and check some of our traffic sensors. we got word from police to avoid this intersection. fremont boulevard and auto parkway. closed to the next two to three hours. this is a major injury crash. we were getting reports of a big rig involved and someone was trapped inside the vehicles. better news in the south bay , traffic traffic alert has been canceled. and traffic is completely back to normal. really down around downtown san jose. 280 and 101, traffic is

pretty light at this hour. we've had no scheduled delays at all this morning. muni, cal train and ace train. >> we're looking at another interesting day around the bay area. thousands of lightning strikes overnight. we could be in for a few more. our kpix 5 doppler radar showing you it's quiet outside. very similar to yesterday at this time. you'll notice a couple radar returns off the coastline in parts of the north bay. that was similar to yesterday as well. a quiet beginning but some time afternoon and evening with the thunderstorms erupting around the bay area. this afternoon, we're going to see a mixture of sunshine and a few clouds. we have the possibility of thunderstorms. with the dry lightning fire danger is running high. that low remains in

place. we have a chance of unsettled weather and more thunderstorms not only today but through tomorrow. mofks on out. and our skies will clear as well. delays over an hour this morning. temperatures expected 70 degrees with partly cloudy skies. 88 and mostly sunny in new york. around the bay today, temperatures a little cooler. still 83 in san jose. 89 in morgan hill. 65 in pacifica. 87 in walnut creek . inside the bay, 60s and 70s. the next couple days, a chance of thunderstorms continued through wednesday and the weather should begin to settle down thursday and friday looks like quiet days. be careful. only takes one lightning strike to ruin

good morning. we're getting our first live look at this serious crash in fremont. a number of emergency crews and that car involved was just crushed. this was auto mall parkway and technology drive. the westbound lane will be closed for the next several hours because there were major injuries involved. updates on this and the rest of the morning commute coming up. >> and if you want to check out a ballgame today, we have partly cloudy skies. temperature of 64 degrees.

lightning storms all over the bay area. 16,000 strikes between 5:00 in the evening and 3:00 this morning. at some periods one bolt every second. that's why fire stations are on high alert. that was a near scare when an electrical fire set homeowner's deck on fire. those firefighters were able to squash it quickly before it was able to spread to the yard vegetation and their neighbor. in this case, speed was their best tactic. >> this time of the year, it's always very scary. always a possibility of fire. the trouble with fire is it starts low and it will go up the canyon faster than you can clear your house. >> reporter: we have a red flag warning in affect which impacts the coastal region as. hillsides as well as the coni can't knows. this will go through tomorrow morning. extra

department is trying to clarify the parameters for the use of cameras. follows video from the scene of the deadly asiana crash. raised questions as to whether the chaos contributed to the death of a chinese student who was on the tarmac. on monday, the fire department set the record straight on helmet recording device policies. >> the policy specifically says that recording devices of any kind, any type of recording device, is prohibited without the permission of the chief of department. >> if they do allow firefighters to wear helmet cams, they would be city issue. california prisoners could soon be forced fed. a federal judge issued a statement to force prisoners. they are protesting the use of solitary

there are new rumors about the next iphone from apple. >> and here is kcbs financial reporter jason brooks with more. i've been waiting wondering when this might come out. >> good morning. the rumors centraled is heating up these days. and that's saying something. numerous reports on the next release of iphones possibly in september including 9 to 5 mac saying apple is close to an agreement with china mobile. that's the biggest carrier in china key to apple making a bigger impact. there are reports apple might be working on a gold iphone which could be targeted towards customers in china. the wall street journal says apple ordered chief manufacturer to make a high end phone and a low cost iphone. another key in competing with a number of other competitors especially in emerging markets. couple big retailers are in focus. good news for best buy.

pretty strong sales in the latest revenue of more than $9 billion. that is sending its stock up. strong sales of smart phones and appliances and strong odd line sales making up slight decline. not such good news for barnes and noble. company saw strong declines in sales in book stores and nooke-reader business. pulling out to buy stores. stock is plunging. stock market trying to snap a 4 session losing streak. market right now pretty flat. s&p down a point. best buy up over 10%. barnes and noble is down 13%. back to you. >> thanks, jason brooks with kcbs news. it is 6:43. a lot of traffic troubles this morning. how are we doing? >> we have. and they continue at this hour.

we have this accident blocking the middle lane. northbound 101 approaching north oakland road. jammed solid to at least tully. you can see on our traffic sensors. the delays continue to grow. the latest drive time is up to 23 minutes in that heavy category from 280 out towards highway 237. those areas so far free and clear. let's take you outside and show you a few live traffic cameras. 880 in oakland is moving fine right now. taillights northbound. pretty quiet commute past oakland airport. i just checked the drive time, up to more than a half hour. on westbound 580 between the pass and the dublin inter change. pretty typical stuff for this time in the morning. unfortunately this is typical for the golden gate

bridge as well. visibility once again an issue this morning across the deck. but looks like southbound traffic moving along okay. and it's been a crazy couple days. with more on lightning strikes and everything in between, here's lawrence. >> very fascinating for me and very dangerous. red flag warnings are up. the fire danger running high. possibility of dry lightning. high def doppler radar is tracking thunderstorms overnight. those have settled down. still see moisture off the bay there rotating away from the coastline. fairly calm outside to start your day. that's how we started out yesterday too. starting out with low clouds and fog and drizzle. by the afternoon, mixture of sunshine and clouds and a chance of thunderstorms. red flag warnings continue across the bay area. looks like the low continues to maintain itself across the coastline. we have unsettled weather today and also into tomorrow and looks like it's going to kick eastward.

span of the bay bridge is on track for a labor day opening. the new issue is over at contractor's bonus. state senator is demanding an investigation before any check is signed to contractor american bridge floor. they are the contractor installing the temporary shims clearing the way for on time opening. american bridge floor was also partly to blame for those busted bolts. and the cost to fix the cracked bolts is $20 million. that's the same amount for the bonus for finishing the bridge on time. we know cal trans will make the decision over that bonus. but we do not know when and what that decision will be. we tried reaching out from the representatives but have not heard back. cate caugurian, kpix 5. >> a mechanical issue forced a san francisco bound united airlines flight to return to london.
